“Learn, Prevent, Screen: Cervical Cancer Awareness”

The “Learn, Prevent, Screen: Cervical Cancer Awareness” webinar organized by College of Medicine, Gulf Medical University, took place on January 26, 2024 for the employees of Sewage Treatment Plant, Ajman. The objective of the webinar was to raise awareness about cervical cancer, its prevention, and the importance of early detection. The event featured an expert in the field, Dr. Shameema Asif Muhammed, Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Clinical Lecturer, Thumbay University Hospital Ajman, who shared valuable insights and information with the participants.

Dr. Shameema provided a comprehensive overview of cervical cancer, explaining its causes, prevalence, and the impact it has on women’s health. The speaker further delved into the various risk factors associated with cervical cancer, including Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection, smoking, and compromised immune systems and emphasized the significance of adopting preventive measures such as maintaining a healthy lifestyle and avoiding high-risk behaviors.

The webinar underscored the critical role of regular cervical cancer screening in early detection and prevention. She elaborated on different screening methods, encouraging women to undergo routine screenings and highlighting how early detection significantly increases the chances of successful treatment.

An essential part of the discussion focused on the HPV vaccine and its role in preventing cervical cancer. She provided information on the vaccine’s efficacy, safety, and the target age group for vaccination. This segment aimed to dispel myths and misconceptions surrounding the vaccine.

The audience had the opportunity to engage with the expert during the Q&A session. The queries covered a range of topics, including specific concerns about cervical cancer, screening procedures, and vaccination. The interactive session allowed for a more personalized and informative experience for the attendees.

The “Empowering Women: Cervical Cancer Awareness” webinar successfully achieved its objective of raising awareness about cervical cancer and empowering women with knowledge for preventive measures. Dr. Shameema provided valuable insights, addressing concerns and fostering a sense of responsibility for one’s health among the women. The webinar concluded with a call to action, urging participants to share the knowledge gained and encourage others to prioritize cervical cancer prevention.
